Gadget ABC

Embracing a circular approach, the project for Gadget ABC transforms the upper two floors of a former nursing home in Zurich into a flexible workspace for 35 employees. Key components of the brief include a four-year use period and a swift, six-month project timeline from start to handover.

The design ephasizes adaptive reuse, including tables made from existing doors and custom lighting solutions—all with minimal intervention. A subtle demolition of selected walls introduces a new level of openness, visually connecting workstations while allowing natural light throughout the space. This approach was encouraged by the unusual freedom of not having to return the space to its original state at the end of the lease.

“The idea was to reuse as much as possible from the demolition,” explains Luiz Albisser. “We established a Materialarchiv of salvaged elements, from doors to electrical plugs, selecting materials for potential reuse and minimizing waste.”

This resource-driven strategy supports a cost-effective, sustainable interior, tailored not only to Gadget ABC's needs but also to the temporary nature of this workspace.
