Ausstellungsraum Klingental

The Ausstellungsraum Klingental was initiated by artists in Basel in 1974, offering a platform for exchange between local artists and the public through experimental exhibition formats. In 2019, the interior renovation of the foyer was completed by Studio Luiz Albisser in collaboration with Basel-based architect Martina Kausch to augment this mandate, creating a versatile space that introduces the exhibition areas and celebrates the group’s history through design.

The foyer is accessible from both the barracks courtyard and a new exterior space facing the city. The interiors are defined by a system of metal structures weaving around the historic architecture and clad by a variety of applied textures: including Stuckmarmor, a traditional craft of plaster-based faux marble layered with colorful accents, aluminum honeycomb panels borrowed from the aircraft industry, and custom brushed black steel hinges.
Layering materials, architectural and artistic applications, the history of the space remains visible while expressing collective thinking and the joy of experimentation in an ever-changing artistic environment.
